Bere Peninsula
Silver Barn is located on the Bere Peninsula, an unspoilt landscape set at the meeting-point of two important rivers, the Tavy and Tamar. Across the Tamar is Cornwall, visible from the barn and its gardens. The Bere Peninsula is bounded by 22 miles of water, and only 1 mile of land, which carries the road to the market town of Tavistock (8 miles away).
The Peninsula itself has two villages, the biggest of which is Bere Alston, which has a pub, fish and chip shop and a number of small shops, including a chemist. In Bere Ferrers, on the estuary of the River Tavy, there is a traditional pub which serves food. The entire Peninsula lies in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is an excellent place for walking, birdwatching and enjoying the tranquil countryside. A single-track scenic branch line provides a two-hourly rail service to Plymouth and the Cornish villages of Calstock and Gunnislake. The area is famous for its history of silver, lead and copper mining, and later for the quality of its market gardens, which produced daffodils, cherries and strawberries which once employed large numbers of people in the Valley. The quietness of the area belies its proximity to the thriving city of Plymouth, just 20 minutes away by train, and about 35 minutes by road.
The stunning beaches of South Devon, North Cornwall and South-East Cornwall are all equidistant from the barn, just under an hour's drive away.
